A Mexican Firing Squad cocktail on a book.

Mexican Firing Squad

Print Recipe
The Mexican Firing Squad takes the Classic Margarita, throws out the Triple Sec and adds Grenadine and Bitters. So it's Tequila, Lime, Grenadine, and Angostura Bitters.
Although the Mexican Firing Squad has been around since the 1930's, it's not quite as famous as other Tequila based cocktails. It is pretty close to a Margarita, but the addition of the Grenadine over the Triple Sec make it a little bit sweeter and therefore a little easier to drink, which could be a good thing for those with a bit of a sweet tooth!

  • Strain into a Rocks glass with fresh ice.
  • Garnish, serve, and enjoy.

Notes

As with so many older cocktails, the Mexican Firing Squad has changed a bit over the years. We say that the cocktail came to us in the 1930's, but that's simply when it was discovered by an American man when visiting Mexico. So who knows how long it was around before that.
The original version sounds like it had a bit less Grenadine so was likely less sweet, which is surprising considering most modern versions of cocktails have becomeĀ less sweet over time. However, without the additional sweetness, it's doubtful drinkers could tell much difference between a Mexican Firing Squad and a Margarita, so it's good that the distinction can be made.
Enjoy and have fun.
