A Mojito.

Mojito

Print Recipe
Rum, mint, lime: it's a great combination. No wonder the Mojito is such a popular cocktail. This refreshing cocktail is perfect for the summer or tropical weather and quite easy to make. Best enjoyed with company, make up a big batch and have some with friends.
And to make sure you get the best possible drink, make sure you're using a good Rum and fresh ingredients. For basic cocktails such as this, each ingredient is vital. You'll be thankful when you try your wonderful cocktail.
What's even better about a Mojito is that it's topped up with Soda Water. Other cocktails with a relatively large amount of citrus can be quite tart and overpowering. The addition of Soda waters things down a fair bit making it easier to drink.
Going further, a Mojito lends itself to variation, so feel to expiriment with other cocktail ingredients to see what you like.
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 60 mL White Rum
  • 30 mL Lime Juice
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 6-8 Mint Leaves
  • 30-45 mL Club Soda

Instructions

  • Build this drink in a tall glass by muddling the Lime Juice, sugar, and mint in a mixing glass. Feel free to add one half of the squeezed out lime into the glass as well. The aim of the muddling is to express the oils of whatever you're muddling, not destroy or rip it, so use some care.
  • Add Rum to the glass and stir.
  • Fill the glass with ice then top it up with Club Soda.
  • Stir and enjoy.

Notes

The origins of the Mojito are older than time itself, so there's no clear story on it. What is known is that it likely originated in Cuba, originally being a mixture of Lime, Mint, Sugar Cane Juice, and an early version of Rum made by native Cubans. The drink was seen as medicinal by Europeans, them not knowing that the Lime Juice was key to helping prevent scurvy while out at sea.
And that's another reason to enjoy a Mojito! It's basically medicine - if you're following 17th century logic. Fruit is good for you. This drink is practically a salad.
