A Couple More Words on the Juan Collins
We here at What Cocktail Can I Make are big fans of a Tom Collins, but sometimes we like something a little different so we make ourselves a Juan Collins! Or maybe, like us, you’re out of Gin so you used our cocktail recipe generator to search for cocktails by ingredient and wound up here. Either way, we hope you like the Juan Collins as much as we do! If not, just circle back to the Tom Collins and everything will be OK. At least you can say you tried something new!
Can I make a larger batch of this cocktail?
The Juan Collins works well as a larger batch. Feel free to mix everything together in a large jug and serve it as a punch or similar. If you’re making a batch for later, just wait to add the Club Soda until you’re ready to serve it, otherwise you’ll lose the bubbles.
The Juan Collins can be a nice welcome drink if you’re having a group of friends over for Mexican food or for a relaxing afternoon in the sun, so feel free to make a bigger batch of it if you like!
Can I make a batch of Juan Collins to keep for later?
If you’re making a batch for later, just be sure not to store it with ice or with the Club Soda in it, as the ice will melt and the Soda will lose its fizz.
Instead, mix everything up (except for the ice and Soda of course!) and put it in the refrigerator for later. Once you’re ready to serve it, add the ice and the Soda Water.
Our favourite time to have a Juan Collins
When we wrote about the Tom Collins we mentioned it’s essentially just alcoholic lemonade, and the Juan Collins is no different. In a way, we’re sure that the Tequila isn’t the only variation on the basic recipe! But, even with the variation, we think the Juan Collins falls into a similar category for timing as the classic. Since the Juan Collins is a long drink with plenty of water in it, it’s a really good refreshment. Because of this we like to have one of these after some sort of physical labour around the house, particularly yard work. It refreshes and you get a little booze as a reward for the hard work.
Alternatively, a Juan Collins is also a good general cocktail for a barbeque or a picnic, or just generally sitting in the sun. It’s just great for afternoon relaxing in general.
How strong is the Juan Collins?
It’s actually about average… The Juan Collins follows a pretty standard formula in terms of amount of spirit and then it dilutes it quite a lot with the Club Soda. All in all it has the same amount of spirit as a myriad of other cocktail recipes, but it’s just longer. While there’s still a good amount of alcohol in there, it’s nice and spread out meaning that the beverage likely takes longer to drink, spacing things out a little bit as you go.
Obviously even with an average strength cocktail it’s easy to overdo it so, as always, be sensible with things. Enjoy your cocktail!
What kind of music do we usually play when having a Juan Collins?
It may sound a little unusual, but we’re going to suggest playing some classic heavy rock when having one of these. The Juan Collins feels a little naughtier than the Tom Collins and needs something a little bit heavier in terms of music to go with it. We’re thinking something like classic Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, or Deep Purple. It’s the kind of music dads like to listen to when doing the gardening. So pop on some headphones, get some yard work done, then reward yourself with a Juan Collins!

Pretty good but I’ll take the original Tom Collins here. I like Tequila plenty, but I just think it’s used better elsewhere. That being said, this cocktail was still fun to drink and easy to make, so bonus points there.
