Our Review of the Gin and Tonic
Yes, Iām going to review a Gin and Tonic. Weāre counting the good old G & T as a cocktail because it is! Itās a basic cocktail, but itās a cocktail indeed.
To actually sit down and write a review of the Gin and Tonic, Iām going to take a cue from our Cuba Libre review, but also jump to the point a lot quicker: the quality of your Gin and Tonic is entirely dependent on the quality of the gin you use as well as the quality of the tonic you use.
Thatās it.
Is the Gin and Tonic a good cocktail? Of course it is. Itās cold, itās refreshing, and itās easy to make. Almost everybody has had a Gin and Tonic and almost everybody has their preferred ratio. You donāt need to follow any directions here, just add the two ingredients together based on your tastes and youāre good to go.
Iām sure there are a few people out there who donāt like a Gin and Tonic, but itās likely because they donāt like gin, or perhaps donāt like tonic water, or maybe they donāt like either! While I disagree with these people, I can understand why. Tonic water can taste odd if you donāt know what it is; it has a bitterness to it that almost tastes like you shouldnāt be drinking it. Meanwhile, gin can have the same problem. Iām not saying either tastes unnatural (they both come from natural ingredients), theyāre just not common flavours for a lot of people.
But Iām digressing a little bit. This is less a review of a Gin and Tonic and more of a longer discussion on the cocktail. But my original point remains: use good gin and also good, fresh tonic. And when I say use fresh tonic water, I mean it. If youāre making gin and tonics at home for yourself and friends, buy the smaller individual bottles of tonic. This way youāll also have fresh and well carbonated tonic water for each and every serving. The texture of a good G & T is just as important as the flavour.
Further to this, take advantage of the many different gins available as well as the many different styles of tonic water that can be found these days. Go beyond Hendrix and Schweppes and actually make a Gin and Tonic youād be proud of. Find something new to try and enjoy. Thatās kind of the point of this whole cocktail journey weāre going on together.
So Iām going to rate the Gin and Tonic pretty highly. One because itās easy to make, two because it tastes good, and three because you can experiment with it.
9/10
