Notes

Where the name and recipe for the Negroni came from has largely been lost in time, however, the drink likely originated in Italy in the early 1900's. The more popular story (legend?) is that the Count de Negroni wanted a stronger version of a popular Campari, Vermouth, and soda drink, so he asked the bartender to add Gin.
As with a lot of stories about the origins of a given cocktail, how much truth is in the above story is completely unknown. Either way, it doesn't matter. The Negroni is a great cocktail and it's a fun story.

Our Review of the Negroni

The mighty Negroni! It’s been around a fair while and hasn’t waned in popularity at all, especially these days. The Negroni is a stronger version of the its precursor, the Americano. If you want more than that, we have a whole article on the history of the Negroni.

But yes, the Negroni certainly is a popular cocktail, and why not? It’s exceptionably simple to make since it’s made of only three ingredients of equal measure. And those three ingredients balance each other out between sweetness, bitterness, and general dryness. It’s all just such a great combination.

Furthermore, a Negroni is good fun to experiment with. Try it with different Gins to see what comes out and what hides away. Substitute the Campari for something else bitter, like a fancy Amaro, and you have something new again. Try a sweet Wine (red or white) instead of the Vermouth and, once again, you have something a little bit different. The Negroni formula is a great way to start experimenting a little bit and get creative with a riff. You probably won’t find something better than the original, but you’ll still probably find something very good.

If you’re new to making cocktails, a Negroni is a great place to start. As mentioned, it’s a pretty easy cocktail to make. You can’t mess it up, and it always tastes good. Of course, don’t be tempted to move away from the equal measures in the recipe, otherwise you’ll disrupt the balance. If you want more, just make another one, it’s that easy to do.

So what are you waiting for? If you haven’t had a Negroni before, I suggest you change that right away. If you have, you’re probably thirsty for one right now. I know I am, and I only just finished mine.
