A Gin Fizz cocktail in front of some polished rocks.

Gin Fizz

Print Recipe
The Gin Fizz, a nice mixture of Gin, citrus, and the fizziness of Club Soda and egg white. There's some similarities to classic sours, but the Club Soda adds a bit more liquid and a bit more fizz to the drink, hence the name. Like a sour, you can make a fizz with almost any base spirit, but the Gin Fizz is the standard and often the most popular. Start here then expand your fizz menu to things like a New Orleans Fizz and a Chicago Fizz.
Once your Fizz game becomes strong, you'll be making wonderful looking cocktails with a thick head of foam created by egg whites and soda water. Not only does this foam look great, it create important mouth feel and a whole lot of fun. It takes a little bit of practice but once you nail it you'll be making a great fizz for everyone to enjoy.
Put simply, this is a great cocktail.

Don't be too disappointed if you don't get the desired fizziness, it takes a little bit of practice. Well carbonated soda water really helps this, so make sure it's fresh. Before you know if you'll be getting a nice fizzy drink with plenty of head. From there you can expand your skills to other fizz style cocktails.
The fizz has been around since the 1870's, but became more popular in the first half of the 1900's. And it's no wonder, it's a great cocktail that tastes good as well as being refreshing. Keep up the long tradition of the fizz and try this cocktail!

Our Review of the Gin Fizz

Although it’s a pretty simple cocktail to make, the Gin Fizz seems more complicated because of the big stack of foam on the top, and that’s part of the fun here. Basically all you need to do is take a similar recipe to a Gin Sour and add some Soda Water to make the foam bigger and denser. It’s cocktails like this that are actually fairly basic, but feel so much more because of the effect they make. Because of this, cocktails like the Gin Fizz are great introductory cocktails for novices to make. They’re not difficult, nor do they require obscure ingredients, but there’s still a sense of accomplishment from shaking a great looking cocktail.

A Gin Fizz is a great way to up your sour game in general. If you’re into sours, you probably started with a Whiskey Sour and then experimented with what other spirits you could use (hint, you can use any spirit you want to). Maybe you’ve even ventured into Mezcal Sour territory. Well done! Now it’s time to expand on the sour formula and start experimenting a little bit more. While the Gin Fizz doesn’t venture too far, it’s still something new and different to try.

So if you like the combination of spirit, Lemon Juice, Simple Syrup, and Egg White, you’ll probably enjoy a Gin Fizz too.

There’s not much more to say about the Gin Fizz in terms of a review. The recipe uses tried and true ingredient combinations that probably won’t surprise you, but they’re common for a reason: they always work and they always work well. So no wonder the Gin Fizz is a great cocktail.

That being said, the Gin Fizz is a good one to start with when getting into the Fizz style. From there you can explore the genre further with the many, many more cocktails of this style out there. Maybe they’re not as prominent as other cocktail styles, but they’re out they’re, they taste good, and have a great visual effect.

So use the Gin Fizz as a gateway into a new style. Enjoy this new style then come back to the basics from time to time when you want something a bit more simple. You won’t regret it.
