Tootsie Roll

This relatively modern cocktail uses Rye, Sherry, and Chocolate Bitters to recreate the taste of the Tootsie Roll candy. It's interesting (and encouraging) that the recipe isn't just loaded up with chocolate flavouring, but just relies on the ingredients interacting to create the desired affect. The chocolate comes through, of course, but this isn't a "chocolate" cocktail, it's a Tootsie Roll cocktail!

Ingredients

60 mL Rye
30 mL Pedro Ximenez Sherry
6 dashes Chocolate Bitters
Garnish with a Cherry

Instructions

Add your ingredients to a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir everything until it's nice and cold.
Strain into a Coupe glass.
Add your garnish and serve. Enjoy.

Our Review of the Tootsie Roll Cocktail

A nice and sweet dessert cocktail that tastes like a Tootsie Roll? Yes please!

You may have your doubts based on the ingredients list for the Tootsie Roll Cocktail, but it does, in fact, taste like a Tootsie Roll. I’m not a scientist who understands how everything works together, I just know how things taste and what I like, but I was surprised that the cocktail got such a great Tootsie Roll flavour. My only guess is that, other than the chocolate bitters adding chocolate flavour, Tootsie Rolls have some slight spice to them which (which is what the rye is for), then more complex flavours imparted by the sherry.

Obviously the Tootsie Roll Cocktail doesn’t taste exactly like a Tootsie Roll, and the more subtle flavours you get in your cocktail will depend on exactly what brands of rye, sherry, and bitters you use, but you’ll get pretty close.

Obviously the Tootsie Roll Cocktail isn’t something to drink all the time. Being a pretty sweet cocktail, the Tootsie Roll is best served as a dessert cocktail or as a sweet treat towards the end of a party. But, at the same time, if you like things sweet, perhaps this is a cocktail you can have all the time. It’s up to you!

From there, you can experiment with the exact kinds of rye and sherry to use (even play with different chocolate bitters). There’s only three ingredients in the Tootsie Roll Cocktail, and you will find some slight differences by playing with specific brands. You may want to see just how close you can get to the flavour of the candy or find out the exact brands you like the best. That’s the fun that can be had with simple cocktails like this: it’s easy to change them up and find some nice differences.
