An Americano cocktail on a bookshelf.

Americano

Print Recipe
The Americano is a precursor to the Negroni that's made with Campari and Sweet Vermouth. Just add some Gin and that's basically the Negroni recipe (minus Soda Water). This creates a cocktail that's a fair bit lower in alcohol than many other cocktail recipes since you're not using the typical higher proof base spirits found in many recipes. In a lot of ways, the Americano also resembles a Manhattan, just made with Campari instead of Rye (and different ratios of course!).
Anyway, going further, the Americano is an older cocktail recipe that first came up in the mid-1800's. No one is quite sure where the name came from, but some think it didn't come about until the Prohibition in the United States. This was (so we're told) a favourite drink amongst American tourists during the time when they were travelling to Europe to "escape" Prohibition.
Total Time 3 minutes
Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 45 mL Campari
  • 45 mL Sweet Vermouth
  • Club Soda to top up
  • Garnish with a twist of Orange

Instructions

  • Put plenty of ice in a Highball glass.
  • Add Campari and Sweet Vermouth.
  • Add Club Soda to taste. Stir gently.
  • Garnish and enjoy.

Notes

Since the Americano uses only a few ingredients, make sure they're of high quality. You don't really get to choose between high quality and low quality Campari (since it's a specific brand), but there's a lot of choices you can make in Sweet Vermouth. Since Sweet Vermouth is such an important aspect to many cocktail recipes, make sure you pick a good one!
Other than that, have fun with this cocktail. It's certainly a nice balanced refreshment to have.

Our Review of the Americano

Campari and sweet vermouth are a lot of fun, I like them! But the big question is, do they hold their own for a low alcohol cocktail treat?

The answer to that question is yes!

Cocktails are usually pretty heavy on the alcohol, but the Americano is an exception. It’s a wonderful tasting cocktail that’s also pretty low on the alcohol. Sure, there are cocktail recipes out there with more ingredients and more complex flavours to them, but the Americano manages to be refreshing without pushing you over the limit too quickly. It’s already been mentioned that the Americano is the precursor to the Negroni, but what that means is that you can get your Negroni vibes on with an Americano but not feel guilty about it in the morning.

Seriously, for Negroni lovers, consider making a change up to the Americano from time to time. Sure, you’ll be missing the gin, which is a lovely part of the cocktail, but you’re actually not missing too much here.

With all that in mind, really the only way to you “play” with an Americano is by changing up the sweet vermouth. Campari is Campari, but different brands of vermouth have different characteristics. Sure, you can try swapping up the Campari with something else bitter, but you’re veering away from the Americano into something else here.

Any way you make the Americano though, it’s sure to be enjoyable. Give it a try!

Actually really nice. I was expecting this to be quite a bit more bitter but the soda water makes it a little easier.
