Painkiller

The Painkiller is a lovely combination of Dark Rum, Pineapple Juice, Orange Juice, and Cream of Coconut. In a lot of ways it's similar to a Piña Colada, but stronger, changed ratios, and an addition of Orange Juice. All that vitamin C and the extra booze will really cure anything that's causing you pain! Perhaps that's where the name came from. In other ways, like the Corpse Reviver, some have used a Painkiller the morning after to get rid of (or perhaps just put off) a hangover.
While our recipe below is specifying pretty much any Dark Rum, the traditional recipes specifies Pusser's Rum, which is a specific blend and brand of Rum. In fact, Pusser's has trademarked the Painkiller. So, if you want to be pedantic, it's not a Painkiller unless it uses Pusser's.
Of course, we feel the spirit of the cocktail is the important thing here. We're more into making cocktails with the ingredients you have, so if you have another Dark Rum, it will do the job. We want you to have fun and try new cocktails, so do your best with getting the "right" ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 60 mL Dark Rum use Pusser's Rum if you have it.
  • 120 mL Pineapple Juice
  • 30 mL Orange Juice
  • 30 mL Cream of Coconut
  • Garness with a wedge of pineapple and some grated nutmeg

Instructions

  • Put Rum, Pineapple Juice, Orange Juice, and Cream of Coconut in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and give it a hard shake. Avoid shaking as long as usual so things don't get too diluted.
  • Strain into a Hurricane glass with fresh crushed ice. You can crush ice yourself by wrapping it in a tea towel and going over it with a rolling pin.
  • Add garnish.
  • Serve and enjoy.

Notes

The Painkiller was created in the 1970's at the Soggy Dollar Bar in the British Virgin Islands. While it was too late for the beginning of the Tiki movement in the 1930's, the Painkiller has quickly become one of the many Tiki classics. This is because of typical Tiki elements in the drink like Rum and fruit juice, as well as it simply being perfect to enjoy pool or beachside in a nice tall glass while sitting in the sun.
