Tiki 43

Print Recipe
If you've never had Licor 43, we suggest you go out and buy a bottle! It's a liqueur that sits on the sweet side with elements of vanilla and some more complex herbal qualities to it. In fact, that's where the name Licor 43 comes from! It's a combination of 43 secret ingredients to give it its unique flavour. While we love it, we're not always sure how to do it. Thankfully, Licor 43 has done the work for us and have created more than a few cocktail recipes that feature their marvelous liqueur.
This recipe is adapted from the recipe that can be found on their website here. The Tiki 43, as the name suggests, is a Tiki riff on a coffee and vanilla cocktail. It doesn't seem like it's going to work, but it actually really does. Don't shy away from this cocktail, it's very very good.
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 10 mL Dark Rum preferably an overproof Jamaican Rum
  • 40 mL Licor 43
  • 20 mL Coffee Espresso is best, but use what you have
  • 20 mL Orange Juice
  • 15 mL Lemon Juice
  • Garnish with a dried slice of orange or a twist

Instructions

  • Make coffee and allow it to cool.
  • Combine Rum, Licor 43, Coffee, and both juices in a cocktail shaker with a good amount of ice. Shake until cold.
  • Strain into a tall glass with fresh ice. The more fresh ice the better.
  • Garnish and serve.

Notes

As mentioned, the combination of flavours you're seeing here may seem a little unusual, but it really works well! The Licor 43 goes very well with both the juices as well as the coffee and seems to sit in the middle between the two. So while the Coffee and the juices don't mix, you get the wonderful taste of Licor 43 complimenting them both at different times. It certainly creates and interesting cocktail!
To that end, we love it when a company decides to create some new cocktail recipes. Sure, there's no fun story to go along with it, but it certainly ensures something new and interesting comes about. And this is a great example.

A Little Bit More on the Tiki 43

As we mentioned a couple times, this recipe really shouldn’t work, but it does! It just goes to show how a great cocktail recipe can bring together some different flavours to create something truly novel. Who would have thought that fruit juice and coffee works so well?

Regarding the coffee, like with an Espresso Martini, feel free to use decaf coffee. If it’s later in the evening, or if caffeine simply doesn’t agree with you, decaf is a fine choice that still works well. That being said though, make sure you’re using a half decent coffee though. It’s always a good idea to use premium ingredients in any cocktail, so use real coffee, not instant!

Will the Tiki 43 work as a larger batched cocktail?

You would have to limit any “batch” to only two cocktails, maybe three if you have a particularly cocktail shaker.

Since this cocktail is shaken with coffee, you want the coffee to froth up. Because of this, you can’t replace the shaking with stirring. So you really need a shaker for this cocktail, and that really limits the batch sizes you can do.

Can I make a Tiki 43 and store it for later?

Not really. As mentioned, one element of this cocktail recipe is the froth from the coffee. If you store it for later, you lose that froth.

Make the Tiki 43 only when you’re ready to serve it.

What’s the best time for a Tiki 43?

Licor 43 suggests this cocktail for after dinner. While we agree with them, we also disagree with them here. Although the coffee element of the recipe definitely puts it as an after dinner drink, it’s actually not as coffee forward as you would think. By all means, have one of these after dinner. It makes an excellent dessert or end of night cocktail. However, thanks to the fruit juice, and its Tiki vibes, it also makes for a very good any time cocktail.

Although fruity cocktails such as this often suit warmer weather, the flavours from the Licor 43 and the the coffee push this into slightly cooler weather. We think it would be a great Autumn cocktail. Perhaps early evening. See how you go!

How strong is the Tiki 43?

We’re not going to classify this as a low alcohol cocktail, but it’s far from strong! Licor 43 is weaker than a lot of straight spirits often used in cocktails, and the only really strong stuff in here is the Rum, which you’re only using 10 mL of. So all in all you’ve only got 50 mL of liquor in here, most of which is only around 31% alcohol by volume thanks to the Licor 43 (compared to at least 40% for the Rum). This put the Tiki 43 at a fair bit below average in strength. It’s not low alcohol, but it’s most certainly not as bad as a lot of the recipes you’ll find out there!

What’s the best kind of music to play when having a Tiki 43

Well, this one’s a bit up to you, and really depends on when you’re drinking it. If you’re having one of these as an after dinner cocktail, we see it as a good one to finish with after a Tiki themed dinner, or a dinner with some serious Tiki vibes. Think a more tropical dinner or if you’re really keen spit roast pork. If this is the case, go back to the “traditional” days of Tiki and play popular music from 1940’s and 1950’s America. Tiki was never about an authentic Polynesian experience, and music of that era really shows that.

If you’re treating this as more of an afternoon or evening cocktail in the Autumn, we think and sort of World Music would work well here. There’s a lot of flavours going on with ideas from different cultures coming through well, so we would say enjoy this cocktail with different music from around the world.

I’m surprised at how well this cocktail worked. You’d think the coffee would be overpowering but it was just enough to keep things interesting. Would make this again.
