A Ward Eight cocktail in a Martini glass.

Ward Eight Cocktail

Print Recipe
This Rye based cocktail combines sweet and sour with citrus fruit and grenadine.
At more than 100 years old, this is well and truly a classic. that can't be missed, however, thanks to its age, there are a few variations on the recipe you may come across, so feel free to play with measurements that suit the way you like things. We've even seen this drink be made with Single Malt Whiskey rather than a Rye or Bourbon, so there's quite a bit of room to play.
Try this classic and enjoy.
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 60 mL Rye
  • 15 mL Lemon juice
  • 15 mL Orange juice
  • 2 tsp Grenadine
  • Garnish with cherries (optional)

Instructions

  • Add Rye, Lemon Juice, Orange Juice, and Grenadine to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until cold.
  • Strain everything into a Coupe glass.
  • Garnish and enjoy.

Notes

Whatever your choice of Whiskey make sure it's a good quality one. There's some other flavours to compete with, but you want to be tasting the Whiskey.
The Lemon and Lime Juices here can be a little overpowering, so make sure to get your ratios right. If you go too heavy with the citrus elements, that's all you'll get. Conversely, it is possible to add a little more Grenadine for sweetness if the tartness from the citrus (especially the lime) is too much for your tastes.
Just remember, you want to be tasting some Rye coming through everything else.

Our Review of the Ward Eight Cocktail

Yum, just yum.

The Ward Eight has spicey Rye, bitter citrus, and plenty of sweetness and other fruit notes from the Grenadine. It has everything! A good cocktail is all about balance, and the Ward Eight has this. There’s plenty of different flavours in this recipe but they don’t seem to out compete each other. Instead, you’re able to taste everything both separately and together for a great experience.

This cocktail leans a little bit strong, thanks to the ample helping of Rye, but it’s also a relatively slow sipper. Although I did mention balance, there is enough sourness in there to slow down the drinking so it doesn’t just go down in one or two big gulps. Balance is great, but pacing is also important if you want to enjoy your night, and that’s where the Ward Eight really shines.

It seems like an odd concoction though, not something you’d immediately think of. Sure, there are plenty of cocktail recipes that mix Rye (or any other Whiskey) with fruit juice, but the addition of Grenadine? So many of the surviving classic Whiskey cocktails tend to avoid mixtures like this, it’s refreshing to see. It still has the feeling of an older cocktail, but just a little bit different.

I highly recommend you try this cocktail and put it on your home menu. After all, it’s made from ingredients you likely have at home already. It’s not the most famous classic cocktail out there, but I’m willing to bet your stumbled upon this recipe through our cocktail ingredients generator.

Will the Ward Eight be your number one favourite cocktail of all time? Probably not. Will this be a recipe you whip out as something different to be universally enjoyed by friends? Definitely.
