A Mexican Mule cocktail in a highball glass.

Mexican Mule

Print Recipe
Part Margarita, part Moscow Mule, all tasty, the Mexican Mule is a cocktail that combines the Tequila and Triple Sec of a Margarita, with the Ginger Beer of a Mule. And of course it has Lime Juice, which is common to both cocktails. Now, don't confuse the Mexican Mule with a Mezcal Mule. Sure, you can use Mezcal in a Mexican Mule, instead of Tequila, but this cocktail really embraces and pushes the Margarita aspect in the Mule equation. Meanwhile, the Mezcal Mule does its own thing, both in terms of being a variation on the Mule formula and just being a great Mezcal cocktail.
Any way you look at it, the Mexican Mule is another great cocktail that you can add to your arsenal of Mules. We've said it before, but the Mule is all about the great taste of Ginger Beer with Lime Juice. The base alcohol is just there for a slightly different spin on an already great mixture.
So go ahead and experiment a little bit, and have fun.

Notes

Like other Mule style cocktails, the Mexican Mule can't be any easier. It's not quite the simple three ingredient cocktail that the original is, but it's still pretty easy to make. And it tastes damn good.

Our Review of the Mexican Mule

The Mexican Mule is an extremely simple cocktail, but a good one nonetheless. It’s also proof that ginger beer goes with almost anything.

It’s already been said that the Mexican Mule is a bit of a combination between a Margarita and a Moscow Mule. And it really is. Take the ginger beer out and yes, you do have a Margarita. So I guess the first thing I’ll say about the Mexican Mule is that if you like a Margarita, you’ll probably like a Mexican Mule. If you like a Moscow Mule, it’s hard to say what you’ll think of this cocktail. Vodka purposefully doesn’t taste like anything, so perhaps using Tequila and adding triple sec will ruin the cocktail for you.

There’s only one way to find out though: make yourself and Mexican Mule and try it!

The Mexican Mule is one of many (many) variations on the mule style cocktail. Basically speaking, a mule cocktail is a combination of spirit and ginger beer, with various of other things added in from time to time. This is a really fun style of cocktail to explore. Firstly, ginger beer is a great mixture. Secondly, it’s a great way to explore other spirits. Perhaps, in the example of the Mexican Mule, you’re usually not a fan of Tequila, but you do like ginger beer. Something like a Mexican Mule is a great way for you to get used to the flavour of Tequila but still having a lot of it masked by the ginger beer. Then you can grow from there.

There’s not a lot more to say about the Mexican Mule though. The mule formula is a great one, but it does get a bit repetitive over time. That’s not to say it’s boring or bad. It’s also not to say that once you’ve tried one mule style you’ve tried them all. It’s just to say there’s only so much that can be written about ginger beer and spirits.

The big difference with the Mexican Mule though (other than the spirit) is the addition of the triple sec. This makes the ginger beer a little more mellow. This can be a good thing if you think ginger beer is overpowering, or it can be a bad thing if you love a nice big ginger beer! I’ll let you be the judge.
