A Beachcomber Cocktail in a Martini glass in front of a Lego VW van.

Beachcomber Cocktail

Print Recipe
This Tiki cocktail, the Beachcomber, was surprisingly not invented by Tiki pioneer Don the Beachcomber, but rather Trader Vic, another pioneer of the Tiki style. As Tiki cocktails go, this one is actually pretty simple, with ingredients most people will have on hand.
In a way, this is a riff on a Classic Daiquiri, with Rum and Lime Juice, and a little bit more with Maraschino Liqueur and Triple Sec. So if you like a Dairquiri, you'll be sure to like this cocktail. The extra sugar provided by the additional ingredients make it a little less tart and sharp than a Daiquiri. While of course you can simply add more sugar to a Daiquiri, it makes it a little one dimensional. This is a great way to perk up a Daiquiri!
Have fun with it!

  • 60 mL White Rum
  • 30 mL Triple Sec
  • 10 mL Maraschino Liqueur
  • 20 mL Lime Juice

  • Garnish, serve, and enjoy.

Notes

As mentioned, despite the name, this cocktail was actually invented by Trader Vic and first appeared in the late 1940's. This puts it right in the heart of Tiki cocktail development and a classic!
Although a classic, the Beachcomber cocktail has evolved a little bit over time. Most modern versions are similar to this recipe while the original version was blended and had slightly different proportions of ingredients. More modern recipes are for more modern sensibilities, so enjoy!

Our Review of the Beachcomber Cocktail

Rum? Yes please!

It shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody that I like cocktails. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that rum based cocktails are my favourite though… that’s because they’re all my favourite. I love all spirits equally. But the Beachcomber Cocktail is one of my favourite rum based cocktails.

Sure, I like a Daiquiri, but the Beachcomber takes things a little further and adds a deeper flavour profile while still staying to the Daiquiri roots. Although the Beachcomber has a little bit more sweetness than a Daiquiri, it still feels like a Daiquiri. There are more than a few cocktails out there with Daiquiri in the name, but I often feel some of these stray too far and just become a sweet fruit drink with a bit of rum in them. The Beachcomber on the other hand is something else!

I’d even go as far as to say that I like the Beachcomber more than the standard/classic Daiquiri. I’ve already mentioned that the Beachcomber just adds more depth of flavour. There’s a lot going on in the Beachcomber and a lot to explore. If you use a good rum (which you should), it still comes through, but so do the other flavours. And although the Beachcomber can be a little on the sweeter side, the tartness of the lime juice is still prevalent enough to create some dryness and make this cocktail a pretty refreshing one.

Next time you’re in some tropical paradise and want to put your feet up by the pool, go past the resort classics like the Piña Colada and go with something a little different like the Beachcomber. Sure, you’re not straying too far, but you’re on holiday, so you shouldn’t have to try too hard. You just want something tasty. And that tasty something is the Beachcomber.
