Our Review of the Tequila Sour
I’ll start this by admitting that I don’t often like Tequila based cocktails. I like Tequila where it’s “supposed” to be, like on its on or in a Margarita. I like Tequila with citrus juice, but as soon as it starts to stray from that, I’m not usually digging the cocktail.
For example, something like the Horny Bull works because it’s just Tequila and orange juice. But it’s getting close to the line that I don’t like. Staying with bull themed cocktails, the Brave Bull isn’t for me. Tequila and Kahlua? That’s weird. The Juan Collins? Close enough to a Margarita for me to like.
So, when going into this review of the Tequila Sour, I was sure where I would stand. Now that I’ve tried the cocktail, I’m still a little unsure about it. There are some serious Margarita vibes going on, except for the Cointreau of course. It’s not straying too far. Because of this, all in all, I like it.
I think, though, that overall the Tequila Sour is too sour. Tequila has a natural sourness to it so, combined with all that citrus juice, you get even more sour, but there’s only a couple barspoons of agave syrup to even things out. The Margarita, on the other hand, has enough sugar in it to keep things tasty.
Before anyone chimes in and reminds me that this is a sour cocktail, I do know this! But sour cocktails aren’t usually this sour. But of course, that’s just my opinion. This is a review after all…
Personally I think this recipe needs a little bit more agave syrup, and I enjoyed it a lot more with four barspoons full. Of course your milage may vary and it will be dependent on your personal taste.
If you like Tequila, the Tequila Sour is a cocktail you should be making frequently in order to move away from all the other “stereotypical” Tequila cocktail recipes out there. You’ll likely really enjoy it. If you like sour style cocktails, you may love this recipe or, like me, you may feel it’s overdone. The only way you can find out is to make a Tequila Sour and see how you go.

Lots of fun. I always like my sour with bourbon or rye, but this was good for something a little different.
