Espresso Martini on a table.

Espresso Martini

Print Recipe
The fun Vodka Martini variation that mixes Vodka, Kahlua, and Coffee. This cocktail has plenty of kick to it both in terms of alcohol as well as coffee. So be careful here; too many of these and you can be over doing it on the caffeine! Of course you're welcome to use Decaf Coffee if you're worried about this part of the drink.
Other than that, this is actually a pretty simple cocktail. Enjoy.
Total Time 7 minutes
Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 40 mL Vodka
  • 20 mL Kahlua
  • 20 mL Coffee Espresso if you can make it. Make sure it's cooled before hand.
  • Garnish with a few coffee beans

Instructions

  • Put Vodka, Coffee, and Kahlua in a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice. Shake until cold.
  • Strain into a Martini glass.
  • Garnish and serve.

A Few More Thoughts About the Espresso Martini

The Espresso Martini combine two great things: alcohol and coffee! While we suggest you use decaf coffee so that you’re not up all night after a few of these, for people who love caffeine, perhaps that’s not quite the suggestion you’re looking for. Adding caffeine to a cocktail, for some people, may be just what you need to stay up later and drink more cocktails. But of course you don’t need to stick to one type of coffee; feel free to flip between both the caffeinated and the non-caffeinated variety of coffee. Other than that, just enjoy this cocktail! It’s pretty well known and one of the many endless variations on the Martini!

As mentioned, if you have the facilities at home to make Espresso, go ahead and make it properly as it will taste better than other coffee making methods. Not all of us have access to an Espresso machine at home, so plunger or drip coffee will do well if needed; you may need to increase the amount of coffee you’re using though in order to get the right flavour.

Am I able to make a larger batch of Espresso Martinis?

This would work, so long as you don’t try to make too many at once. It’s important that an Espresso Martini is shaken very well in order to get a good amount of froth from the Espresso. If you’re trying to shake a bunch of Espresso Martinis at once, you just won’t get the same effect as shaking just one.

You can make two, maybe three, in one shaker, but don’t go for more.

Is pre-making an Espresso Martini a good idea?

Due to the frothing issue mentioned, you don’t want to pre-make an Espresso Martini either. Part of the texture and the look of an Espresso Martini is the froth from the coffee. If you leave it to sit for too long you’ll lose the froth.

When do you like to have an Espresso Martini?

It’s probably no surprise that the Espresso Martini is a great after dinner cocktail. People often like to have a coffee after a meal, while others like to have a drink; the Espresso Martini combines both of these! An after dinner beverage (whether that be a coffee or a cocktail, or in this case both) is a great way to continue an already good evening with friends or family. It also allows you the time to let food settle. Put simply it’s relaxing and fun!

Although you have to make coffee for this cocktail, the rest of the recipe is extremely simple. Just throw in some Vodka and Kahlua and you’re pretty much done. This is another reason why the Espresso Martini is great for after dinner: it’s easy to make. This way, if you’re entertaining, you don’t have to leave the table for long. Plus your guests aren’t kept waiting!

Is the Espresso Martini a strong cocktail?

It’s actually not too bad! As cocktails go the Espresso Martini is actually average. This is nice for an after dinner drink since you will likely have had a couple other drinks while dining. Despite the Kahlua, the cocktail is also relatively light, so it sits just right.

We often find that the Espresso Martini is a cocktail you only have one of. While it may be nice to sit and have a few ordinary Martinis, given the slightly bigger flavour of the Espresso, one is usually enough. But that one is great!

What music goes well with the Espresso Martini?

While we often like to talk about the type of music to pair with a given cocktail, this one is a little bit harder. The standard Martini has the class and sophistication to it to suggest some upscale music that you’d be listening to at a cocktail party, but the Espresso Martini feels more like a sitting down kind of drink. As mentioned, it’s a nice cocktail to sip on after eating.

So this puts us into the territory of what music should be played after dinner. This is a pretty big discussion, as tastes vary and people have different kinds of dinner parties. If, for example, you’re having a particular theme to a dinner party, the music may be dictated by the theme. If it’s more of a casual dinner gathering with generic background music, perhaps you just leave on whatever you were listening to over dinner.

So we’ll leave this one to you. There’s too many factors to consider here!
