Our Review of the Fancy Whiskey Cocktail
I like Scotch Whiskey. I actually pretty much like everything, so I was excited to try this cocktail.
Some may think that Scotch, blended or otherwise, shouldn’t go into a cocktail A good Scotch is best enjoyed on its own, perhaps with a little bit of water or an ice cube. Don’t tamper with Scotch is what some people say! I tend to disagree with this. Sure, good Scotch is wonderful on its own. But so is good Gin, or good Tequila, or good Rum. If this was the firm rule, we wouldn’t have cocktails in the first place.
So it’s easy to discredit the Fancy Whiskey Cocktail quite quickly because people tend to hold Scotch in higher regards and will discount any recipe that uses Scotch. But let’s set that aside for a minute.
In a lot of ways, the Fancy Whiskey Cocktail resembles an Old Fashioned, except made with Scotch (obviously) and with the addition of Triple Sec. And that works! A Manhattan uses Orange Bitters, so the flavour isn’t completely wrong going with Whiskey, it’s just a little bit more and different than if you’re using Triple Sec.
Perhaps you came across the recipe for the Fancy Whiskey Cocktail because you were looking for something similar to a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned. Perhaps you had all the ingredients for these two cocktails, plus some Triple Sec you didn’t know what to do with so you put it into our cocktail recipe generator and found this. Well, you’ve probably found a winner.
If you’re on the side of things that doesn’t want to blemish Scotch, I still encourage you to try this cocktail and make up your own mind. You may be surprised and then find a whole new world of Scotch to enjoy. Keep exploring and keep having fun. Don’t stay closed off. The worst thing that will happen is you won’t enjoy the cocktail too much and you’ve only wasted 60 mL of Scotch and a few other ingredients.
