A Horny Bull cocktail.

Horny Bull

Print Recipe
Essentially just a Screwdriver made with Tequila instead of Vodka, the Horny Bull is an easy to make cocktail that combines Orange Juice and Tequila. That's it! This is possibly the easiest Mexican inspired cocktail out there. Even easier than the Margarita, which only has three ingredients. For lovers of easy to make Orange Juice based cocktails, the Horny Bull is definitely one to add to the menu. We've said it before, but Orange Juice is one of those juices that just combines well with only one other ingredients. Oranges are both naturally sour and sweet, unlike its citrus cousins like Lime or Lemon Juice where you often have to add sugar to smooth things out. Orange Juice doesn't usually need to be sweetened. So, unlike, say a Daiquiri where you need some sugar to smooth out the edges (and it's kind of the same with the Margarita actually...), Orange Juice doesn't need any sugar. So that's one less ingredient to deal with!
Total Time 3 minutes
Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 60 mL Tequila Blanco or any Tequila of your choice
  • 150 mL Orange Juice

Instructions

  • Add Tequila and Orange Juice to a Highball glass filled with ice.
  • Stir lightly to mix everything and chill it.
  • Serve!

Notes

As with so many other two ingredient Orange Juice cocktail recipes, make sure your Orange Juice is fresh and of good quality. Freshly squeeze it yourself if possible. As mentioned, Orange Juice has both a natural sweetness and a natural tang to it, and this balance is better with the fresh stuff. Non-fresh Orange Juice has preservatives in it that can often take away from a lot of that wonderful natural sweetness. This will lead to a sub-par drinking experience.
And this goes the same for the Tequila of course! Cheap Tequila tastes, well, like cheap Tequila. That may be fine if you're just shooting it to get drunk, but if you're looking to actually enjoy a cocktail, use the good stuff.

Our Review of the Horny Bull

Tequila plus orange juice. That’s a pretty simple cocktail recipe… but there’s nothing wrong about simple if the drink in your hand tastes good. And yes, the Horny Bull tastes good.

Personally, if I had to choose between vodka and orange juice and Tequila and orange juice, I’m going to choose the Tequila any day of the week, and that’s why I’m going to choose the Horny Bull over a Screwdriver.

Why?

Well, vodka is good, but it doesn’t add enough extra flavour to something so simple to make it interesting. But with a good Tequila being used in a cocktail like this, there’s plenty of interest. The recipe calls for a blanco Tequila and, if you know the difference between different kinds of Tequila, you’ll know the blanco has the least amount of aging. This adds a lot of bold and big flavours to a cocktail like this, and they’re quite welcome. I also tried making the Horny Bull will a Tequila with a little more age to it, a reposado, and it also held up quite well.

So while the Horny Bull is a basic cocktail that’s easy to make, there are ways to explore it, and one of those ways is by playing with different kinds of Tequila, whether that’s different styles or different brands. That’s the way to really liven up a simple cocktail: use good ingredients and something that will really make the cocktail come into its own. Without it, you’ll have a not so good cocktail.

So when I made and tried the Horny Bull, I used some good Tequila. I actually tried a few to have a bit more of an adventure with the whole thing. And all in all, I was quite satisfied with the easy mixture of Tequila and OJ.

Try the Horny Bull if you’re after a Tequila based cocktail but don’t want to put in the effort of making something more complex. You won’t regret it!
