Amaretto Sour
Ingredients
- 45 mL Amaretto
- 30 mL Bourbon
- 20 mL Lemon Juice
- 1 tsp Simple Syrup*
- Egg White
- Garnish with lemo twist and/or cherries
Instructions
- Add Amaretto, Bourbon, Lemon Juice, Simple Syrup and Egg White to a cocktail shaker without ice and dry shake. Be careful as dry shaking doesn't give you as good a seal on the shaker. You're dry shaking so that you can froth the Egg White up a little bit.
- Shake again with plenty of ice to get things cold.
- Strain into a Rocks glass either with fresh ice or neat.
- Add garnish, drink.

Our Review of the Amaretto Sour
I like a Whiskey Sour, but does that mean I’ll like an Amaretto Sour as well? I don’t think that just because someone enjoys a Whiskey Sour means they’ll automatically be a fan of the variations on the theme.
To me, the beauty of a Whiskey Sour is that it’s mostly tart (it’s in the name), with only a bit of sweetness to stop the cocktail from being too intense. Add amaretto to the mix, and obviously the cocktail is going to be a whole lot sweeter. And that’s what you get with an Amaretto Sour. Yes, the Amaretto Sour still has plenty of sourness to it, but amaretto is a sweet and nutty liqueur that of course alters the flavour profile of the classic sour quite a bit.
So the big question is, does the amaretto add more to the standard cocktail recipe or does it take something away? Well, in my opinion, I think the amaretto adds something, meaning I quite like the Amaretto Sour. BUt that’s also to say that I think there’s a time and a place for a standard Whiskey Sour and an Amaretto Sour.
Both cocktails work well for dessert, but the Amaretto Sour works better because it’s a lot sweeter. The Whiskey Sour, on the other hand, does well for dessert or as a cocktail to have any time. Start the night on Whiskey Sours, end the night on Amaretto Sours.
I like the Amaretto Sour as a great way to expand the general sour menu. I highly recommend it!
