A Whiskey Smash in a jam jar.

Whiskey Smash

Print Recipe
Kind of like a lemony version of a Mint Julep, the Whiskey Smash combines Mint with Lemon and Bourbon from a refreshing cocktail. This is a classic cocktail recipe dating back to the late 1800's. You'll see some similarities to other classic Whiskey cocktails, but also notice some differences.
A big thing you'll notice is you're not directly using Lemon Juice. Instead you're muddling lemon wedges with mint. Take care here as this is an important step. You want to get some of the oils out of the lemon peels, rather than just squeezing the juice out.
Have fun here.

Notes

*Go here for how to make Simple Syrup at home.
This cocktail can be quite sharp if you overdo it on the Lemon Juice or underdo it on the Simple Syrup. Even for people who usually dial back the sugar in their cocktails will probably find that they need the full allotment from the recipe. However, the tartness of of the Lemon in this drink can be quite refreshing.

A Bit More About the Whiskey Smash

We like the Whiskey Smash because it says exactly what it is in the name. Take some Lemons and Mint Leaves, smash ’em, then shake with Whiskey and some Simple Syrup. So often cocktail inventors are trying to come up with a clever name or a reference to some. This recipe does what it says on the tin! OK, perhaps muddling some Lemon Wedges and Mint Leaves isn’t completely akin to smashing them, but it’s close enough for us to appreciate this recipe.

As mentioned though, things can get a little sour if you go too hard on the Lemon Juice or don’t add enough sugar. If that’s the case, just add a little bit more sugar or let some of the ice melt for awhile to dilute things. When you get it just right it’s quite lovely!

Does making more than one Whiskey Smash at the same time work?

You can probably make two of these cocktails at the same time, but any more and you’ll have trouble muddling the multiple Lemon Wedges. When crushing everything with your muddler, it’s important that you get the juice and oils from he skin out of the Lemon. If you have too much in the cocktail shaker, you’ll have trouble muddling everything. So don’t overdo it.

Does making these cocktails in advance work?

Not really. When you muddle everything oils are expressed and then when you shake it, the texture of the citrus changes. Because of this, it’s relatively important to serve these cocktails relatively quickly. If it’s only a few minutes you should be fine, but don’t leave the drink in the fridge for an hour.

What’s the best time for a Whiskey Smash?

The Whiskey Smash is kind of like a short Lemonade with a bit of Whiskey in it, so if you’re looking for a nice warm weather refresher, this is possibly the cocktail for you. Of course it’s not as long as, say, a Tom Collins, but, thanks to the Lemon Juice, it has a similar effect. Maybe it’s warm and you want something with a bit of bite to it to cool you down, but all that liquid in a longer drink just doesn’t sound appealing. Smash it!

We also think of the Whiskey Smash as a nice drink for sitting around in the garden in the late afternoon. Kind of like a Gin and Tonic, it’s a nice little leisure drink that’s not too big and not too small. It’s just right. Try swapping in a Whiskey Smash for cocktails for the simple cocktails that are usually just mixer and spirit, there’s a few extra steps of course, but you may find it worth it.

How strong is a Whiskey Smash

If you’re looking at this cocktail as a replacement for a Gin and Tonic and other similar cocktails, you’ll find it’s about the same in strength. The alcohol in this recipe is coming from the 60 mL of Bourbon, which you’ll find is the “regular amount” if you look at other recipes.

It’s also nice that the Whiskey Smash is a little on the more sour side of things. It’s really not a drink that you want or are able to drink too quickly. Keep it slow!

What sort of music should you put on with a Whiskey Smash

If you’re anything like us, you like a little bit of music in the background, whether you’re having a cocktail or not. So if we’re having a cocktail, we like to put some music on to go with it.

For the Whiskey Smash, we’re thinking something a little heavier. Although cocktails usually have a more elegant angle to them, the Whiskey Smash is a little rougher, in our opinion anyway. It’s pretty simple to whip up and drinking one out of unusual receptacles doesn’t sound completely crazy. So why not put on some rougher or heavier music with the Whiskey Smash. While it’s not really the most Punk Rock of cocktails, we’d still likely enjoy drinking one of these while enjoying some Punk at the same time. Have fun!
