A Dark and Stormy cocktail.

Dark 'n Stormy

Print Recipe
An easy to make cocktail that uses Dark Rum, Lime Juice, and Ginger Beer. If you're the drinker of a Moscow Mule, you'll probably see some similarities to this recipe; yep, it's close to being a Moscow Mule, just with Dark Rum. If you're not sure about getting starting with Rum, but you know you like a Mule, perhaps this is where to start.
Although it's a similar drink to the Moscow Mule, it may be unlikely that this is a straight variation of the recipe. Rum, combined with Lime Juice, and various combinations there of, have been main stays with sailors for generations. Sailors were given Rum rations, less to get drunk and more to keep water clean. Lime Juice, of course, was also used for taste and to prevent scurvy. Ginger, with a great taste and general medical qualities, is an obvious addition.
Total Time 3 minutes
Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 60 mL Dark Rum
  • 15 mL Lime Juice
  • 150 mL Ginger Beer to top up/to taste
  • Garnish with a Lime Wheel

Instructions

  • Add Rum and Lime Juice to a Collins glass filled with ice.
  • Top up with Ginger Beer (to fill the glass or to taste).
  • Garnish and serve.

Notes

You can give this drink a light stir if you want to make sure everything is completely mixed, but it's also fun to leave everything un-stirred. The layers won't be very distinct but they'll be there. This creates a good looking drink as well as layers of flavour.

Our Review of the Dark ‘n Stormy

The Dark ‘n Stormy is so simple but also so tasty. There, that’s my review!

But seriously, it’s difficult to review a basic cocktail like the Dark ‘n Stormy. What is there to say? Some people don’t even consider something like this a cocktail. They may refer to it as a “mixed drink” or something like that and consider a cocktail something fancier. I think the Dark ‘n Stormy is a cocktail, but will admit that it’s far from fancy.

With fresh ginger beer and a good rum, a Dark ‘n Stormy really can’t be beaten for refreshment. It’s great on a warm day after doing yard work or at a barbeque. While I enjoy drinking beer as much as I enjoy drinking cocktails, sometimes I’m not in the mood for a beer when a beer would be appropriate. At times like this a Dark ‘n Stormy goes well because it’s a decent sized drink and has a similar pacing to a beer.

But, as I mentioned, the Dark ‘n Stormy isn’t the fanciest of cocktails. I don’t think anybody would judge you if you had one at a nicer gathering, but the cocktail may seem slightly out of place. As I already mentioned, I like to reserve my Dark ‘n Stormies for more casual gatherings like barbeques.

Other than that, there’s not a lot to say about the Dark ‘n Stormy in terms of a review. Some people don’t like ginger beer, in which case they may want to skip the Dark ‘n Stormy. But it may also be worthwhile for the ginger beer haters to try a cocktail like this; the rum and lime juice mute the flavour a little bit and you may find something you like.
