Gin Blossom

Print Recipe
The Gin Blossom is another riff on the Gin Martini that changes things up a little bit with a different kind of Vermouth from your standard Dry Vermouth as well as the addition of Apricot Eau de Vie for something even more creative. This makes the ingredients in this cocktail slightly more unusual than what many will have at home, but maybe you stumbled on this recipe because you were seeing what cocktail you can make with the ingredients you have on hand, and you happened to have some unusual ones!
As Martini style cocktails go, the Gin Blossom is a relatively new one. This cocktail wasn't invented until 2008 by Julie Reiner of the Clover Club in Brooklyn, New York.
If you're getting tired of the standard Martini, perhaps it's worthwhile to try and make a Gin Blossom. It's still pretty simple, but just different enough to keep things interesting.
Total Time 3 minutes
Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 45 mL Gin Plymouth Gin is the standard
  • 45 mL Bianco Vermouth
  • 20 mL Apricot Eau de Vie
  • 2 dashes Orange Bitters
  • Garnish with a twist of Orange

Instructions

  • Add everything to a mixing glass filled with ice.
  • Stir everything to ensure it's cold and mixed.
  • Strain mixture into a Coupe glass.
  • Garnish and enjoy.

Notes

Since this is a relatively modern cocktail recipe, there's not really much room to add your own spin or interpretation on it. To that end, as much as you can, use the "proper" ingredients including a Plymouth Gin (rather than a London Dry) and a Bianco Vermouth.
You may be tempted to just use a Dry Vermouth, but it's just not the same as Bianco. With that being said, don't use Sweet Vermouth either. Use Bianco!

Sure, Aprico Eau de Vie isn’t necessarily the most common ingredient out there, but if you have it, you’re probably wondering what to do with it. Why not try making a Gin Blossom with it? Although the Gin Blossom is a relatively simple cocktail to make, the ingredients kind of push this cocktail out of the “beginner” cocktail realm. Not many people start their bar with Bianco Vermouth and Apricot Eau de Vie! But perhaps this cocktail is a good way to extend the ingredients you have at home.

Keep exploring new cocktails and keep expanding on what you have. That’s the fun of making cocktails!

Am I only able to make one Gin Blossom at once?

Not at all. If you want to make more than one Gin Blossom in your mixing glass, you’re more than welcome to. Just increase the amount of everything and stir it all together at once. Then just pour everything out evenly into individual glasses. Then everybody gets a cocktail!

Do I have to serve the Gin Blossom right away?

While the Gin Blossom is best served chilled, if you’re not intending on having this cocktail right away, you’re OK to live it in the fridge for awhile to keep cool before you drink or serve it. The cocktail should last awhile without too much trouble. Obviously remove the ice if you’re not going to serve the cocktail right away.

What’s the best time to have a Gin Blossom?

We recommend enjoying a Gin Blossom whenever you want to add a touch of class to an occasion. Cocktails, in general, are usually pretty classy, but the Gin Blossom is even classier thanks to its unique ingredients and closeness to the Martini.

Maybe you want to make something special for friends who are coming over for a nice dinner party, or you want to celebrate a recent achievement with your partner. The Gin Blossom is perfect for this.

Is the Gin Blossom Strong?

The Gin Blossom isn’t a low alcohol cocktail by any means, but compared to the standard Gin Martini and a lot of its variations, it’s actually a little bit weaker, but not by much!

This recipe calls for a little less Gin than a lot of Martini style cocktails, but makes up for it with the Vermouth and Eau de Vie, both of which tend to be less alcoholic than Gin. Does this mean you don’t need to be careful when drinking a Gin Blossom? Of course not, it’s still a cocktail, and most cocktails have a kick to them. It’s just not as strong as some cocktails.

What’s the best kind of music to pair with a Gin Blossom?

As mentioned, the Gin Blossom is a very classy cocktail, so find something classy to play when you drink this cocktail. Of course, what is classy will very much depend on your own personal taste though! If you think Death Metal brings a certain touch of class to things, then all means, play some Death Metal. Otherwise, go with something a little more sensible.
