Our Review of the Gin Martini
Oh yes, the Martini. It’s probably the most well known cocktail there is. I find it kind of surprising that Martinis are so well known and popular when it’s “just” gin and dry vermouth. I know a good Martini is so much more than that though, and there are endless debates on the right ratio of gin to vermouth. Myself, I prefer my Martinis with as little vermouth as possible. Sometimes I like just a drop of orange bitters, but I need to be in the mood for that.
But you may be the type of person who’s never had a Martini before. Don’t worry, I’m not here to judge. And really, there’s nothing to be judged on. Whether you’re new to cocktails or have been drinking them for awhile, a Martini almost feels too stereotypical to bother with. I’m guilty of this too. I won’t usually order a Martini unless I’m at a bar known for its gins and I know they know what they’re doing. When making cocktails at home, I’d rather take the time to make something more elaborate or, if I’m going simple and want gin, I’ll just make a Gin and Tonic.
But that’s one of the reasons why the Martini is actually so special. It’s so simple you almost wouldn’t bother with it, but when done right, it can be fabulous. I can’t remember where I heard it, but every good chef needs to be able to make an omelet. And every good mixologist needs to be able to make a Martini.
With all that being said, I hope I haven’t scared you off from making a Martini for yourself at home. It’s not that hard to make a more than passable Martini. It’s also not that hard to make a very good Martini. I just find the experts often have more exotic vermouths and sometimes a couple little tricks up their sleeves can push this simple cocktail recipe towards greatness.
While its simplicity is a great thing about a Martini, it’s also a bad thing about it. Variations on the Martini quickly become more exciting than the original, with things like the Dirty Martini become the preference of many. The cocktail is so ubiquitous that “tini” is added to things that are far from being a Martini as well. I’m looking at you Porn Star Martini. But I suppose that’s not the fault of the original recipe…
I highly recommend a good Martini, and suggest you avoid a bad one. It’s a wonderful way to consume gin.
