Our Review of the Baltimore Bracer
The Baltimore Bracer is a pretty simple cocktail… brandy, anisette liqueur, egg white. That’s it! It you like anisette flavours, you’ll love the Baltimore Bracer. If you don’t like anisette flavours? Well… you’ll hate it.
That’s pretty much the review of the Baltimore Bracer right there. Brandy is wonderful, but it tastes like brandy. The anisette in the Baltimore Bracer takes over everything else. In a lot of ways it’s quite a nice flavour, but there are a lot of people who simply don’t like it.Â
Personally, I’m a big fan of licorice, but something like Ouzo isn’t really my thing. Mix it with something else like in a Baltimore Bracer and I actually like it. So what this means is that if you love licorice, you may love this cocktail. But, at the same time, if you hate licorice, you may be surprised by the Baltimore Bracer. Anisette liqueur, and licorice flavours in general, can really surprise people. So if you don’t like licorice, don’t immediately discount the Baltimore Bracer; it may be a dark horse!
But because of all of this, it’s really hard to review a cocktail like the Baltimore Bracer. Personally, I really liked it. But I like to remove as much of my personal biases from a cocktail review. Of course they’ll be there, but I like to think about what’s good about a cocktail in general and what’s not working in general. But licorice flavours can be so divisive, I can’t speak in generalities.Â
So all I’m going to say is take the time to mix brandy and anisette liqueur, see if it’s for you. If it is, make it again. If it’s not, move onto something else.
