A Jean Harlow Cocktail on some books.

Jean Harlow Cocktail

Print Recipe
Named after actress Jean Harlow as this was her favourite drink, this is a simple Rum Martini style cocktail. If you like a Martini, this is a nice twist on a classic. If you are a Martini fan, you probably have Vermouth in the house, which is perhaps how you stumbled upon this cocktail when you entered ingredients into our cocktail builder.
As this cocktail is only two ingredients, it's extremely easy to make, however it's important that you have good ingredients, especially in the Rum. What's better, try some different White Rums to see what you like best. Different Rums have different features, so have fun here.
And if you want to try a few Martinis, get some Vodka and Gin as well and do a side by side tasting!

Notes

As mentioned, this cocktail is fabled to be the favourite drink of 1930's actress Jean Harlow. Unfortunately Harlow's Hollywood career was cut short after passing away from kidney failure in 1937, she was only 26 years old. Despite this, she still left her mark on the movie business and remains a relatively well known household name to this day.
And that's perhaps why she has a cocktail named after her! Sure, Rum is great on its own, but adding a little sweetness to it from the Vermouth rounds it out so well. Perhaps that's why two ingredient cocktails containing nothing but a base spirit and Vermouth are so popular...

More Things About the Jean Harlow Cocktail

Although it’s a pretty simple cocktail recipe, the Jean Harlow Cocktail has a few surprises in it. It’s surprising that just White Rum and Sweet Vermouth can do some much together. Rum is pretty nice on it’s own, but the Sweet Vermouth just does something to it… it’s great!

Can I make more than one Jean Harlow Cocktail at once?

Why not? Just put more of everything into your cocktail shaker and you should be OK to make enough cocktails for friends. Just be aware of how much you’re actually adding to your shaker, if you feel like you’re putting too much in there, it’s probably best to tone it down a little and split everything into two batches.

Is it OK to make this cocktail early and serve later?

While cocktails in general, and especially shaken cocktails, are generally best served right away, the Jean Harlow Cocktail shouldn’t suffer too much if you don’t serve and drink it right away. But don’t let it sit for multiple hours! Just while you’re waiting for your friends to arrive.

When is a good time to try a Jean Harlow Cocktail?

Since this drink is named after Hollywood actress from the 1930’s, it’s obvious that the Jean Harlow Cocktail has a classic, Golden Age of Hollywood feel to it. Because of this, this cocktail is best suited for fancy cocktail parties or upscale bars. Don’t try to pair this recipe with a food or leave it for before or after a meal, just enjoy a Jean Harlow Cocktail for the sake of it!

While you’re more than welcome to have one of these any time (of course!), the fanciness of the Jean Harlow Cocktail really lends itself to when you’re socialising, so why not have some fun with it and reserve this recipe for special occasions?

Is the Jean Harlow Cocktail strong?

It has a bit of punch to it, but it’s not too bad. We’d say it’s about medium, but on the strong-medium side. The biggest part of the strength of the Jean Harlow Cocktail is that it’s relatively sweet and smooth thanks to the Sweet Vermouth and there’s nothing in there to dilute both the White Rum and the Sweet Vermouth. Very often a cocktail recipe will have a non-alcohol component (such as juice or carbonated water) which brings down the ABV of the drink while also increasing the volume. It takes longer to drink something with more diluted so it’s less dangerous! So be careful with the Jean Harlow Cocktail, it can creep up on you.

What music goes best with the Jean Harlow Cocktail?

Being a cocktail that’s associated with old Hollywood, we need some sort of music that goes with that feeling! Because of this, we’re thinking old film scores. More modern film scores would work, but if you want the true feeling, go with dramatic film music from the 1920’s and 1930’s, it’s a lot more fun! For extra points, get the soundtrack to one of Jean Harlow’s classic movies; perhaps Hell’s Angels or Saratoga. Harlow managed to produce a large body of work during her relatively short time working, so there’s lots to choose from. If you can’t find the score, maybe find the movie and enjoy the cocktail while watching!
