Nevada Cocktail

Print Recipe
A refreshing, tasty, but easy to make Rum cocktail, the Nevada cocktail combines grapefruit and lime with Rum for something a little bit different. This ones a bit of an oldie, so you may have seen variations of this recipe elsewhere. Feel free to expiriment.
Being a Rum and fruit juice cocktail, you can think of it as a variety of Daiquiri, so this one is for the Dairquiri lovers! The Graphefruit Juice can make things a little bit tart, but there's sugar added to try and counterbalance this.
Whip up a few of these for friends, see what ratios you like, and go from there.
Total Time 3 minutes
Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 45 mL White Rum
  • 45 mL Grapefruit Juice
  • 30 mL Lime Juice
  • 2 tsp Sugar
  • 1 dash Angostura Bitters
  • Garnish with lime wedge

Instructions

  • Put Rum, Grapefruit Juice, Lime Juice, Sugar, and Angostura Bitters in a cocktail shaker with a good amount of ice.
  • Shake well and ensure the drink is cold.
  • Strain into a Martini glass.
  • Garnish and drink.

Notes

Although there's plenty of citrus here, make sure you also use a good quality Rum so the flavours come through for the best possible cocktail.
Since this is a fairly basic variation of a Classic Daiquiri, there's not a huge amount of information on this cocktail. The addition of Grapefruit Juice (and of course the Bitters!) adds a lot to the drink, but it's not so different from a standard Lime Daiquiri that it warrants a discussion.
Because of this, the name remains a bit of a mystery. It's a great mixture, yes, but what does it have to do with Nevada?
Oh well, let's have a drink.

Want to Know More About the Nevada Cocktail? Read on!

The Nevada Cocktail has elements of a Classic Daiquiri and elements of a Hemingway Daiquiri, but it’s really its own thing. If you like either of those cocktails, you’ll probably like a Nevada Cocktail as well!

Will this cocktail still come out OK if I make more than one at a time?

It should, but don’t try to shake more than two cocktails at once. You may be able to get away with fitting three cocktails in your shaker at once, but we think that would be pushing it. Put care into each of the cocktails you make. The time is worth it!

Do I have to serve the Nevada Cocktail right away?

We would suggest serving this cocktail right away. A well shaken cocktail has a great texture to it and the Nevada Cocktail gets just a little bit of foam thanks to the citrus juices. Keep this cocktail fresh for the full experience.

When is a fun time to try a Nevada Cocktail?

Although there’s the similarities to a Daiquiri here, the Nevada Cocktail doesn’t have the same relaxed, vacation, almost tropical vibe to it. In a lot of ways it feels a lot more serious than its other Rum and Lime Juice cousins. Maybe it’s the addition of the Angostura Bitters that does it. Bitters just makes things feel a little more traditional and old fashioned.

So if it’s not a vacation cocktail, what is it? Like so many cocktails that are served in a Coupe or Martini glass, it just feels like the type of cocktail you drink at a nice bar or when mingling others at a party. It’s kind of fancy, so it suits! So next time you’re at a fancy bar with some friends, try ordering a Nevada Cocktail. Or invite those same friends over and impress them with a nice little riff on the Daiquiri: the Nevada Cocktail.

How strong is the Nevada Cocktail?

It’s no worse than a Daiquiri! And sorry to keep talking about it, but yeah, the Daiquiri is just a nice reference not for this recipe. With that in mind, we’re going to say that the Nevada Cocktail is about medium in terms of strength. Not too strong, not too weak. While the sourness of the Grapefruit Juice and the Lime Juice are dialed back a fair bit thanks to the sugar, it’s not too much, so you won’t be tempted to gulp down your drink and overdo it!

But hey, cocktails are naturally stronger than other alcohol drinks (except straight spirits of course!), so the strength of them is always relative.

What music goes well with the Nevada Cocktail?

We always like to pair music with our cocktail recipes. It’s just a bit of fun! The Nevada Cocktail is a little bit of a tough one. It seems to sit between so many different spaces, it’s a bit unclear. It’s a great cocktail, don’t get us wrong, it’s just hard to classify.

Although Nevada isn’t often associated with being the “Wild West,” it actually was back in the day, and still has plenty of rural areas to it. Watching old western movies, people roamed between the likes of Montana and Texas… it wasn’t all just in Arizona. So we’re going to put Nevada as a western place and pair its cocktail with Country and Western music. But classic Country and Western music. A little bit laid back and easy to listen to. Enjoy it!

Really fun cocktail. The rum still comes through really well even despite all the grapefruit juice and lime juice. I’ll probably do a bit less sugar next time, but that’s just the way I like things.
