Rum Zoom

The Rum Zoom is a simple mixture of Rum and Cream (with some Honey as well) to create a sweet cocktail that's guaranteed to warm you up. Yes, this cocktail is a bit of a Winter warmer (although it's served cold). Some people like warm milk, but it wouldn't really go here. Maybe it does... you're welcome to try!

The Zoom is a general style of cocktail that's made up of milk, honey syrup, and a spirit. More commonly, this recipe is made with Cognac or Brandy, but you can really use any base spirit you can think of. Obviously some spirits do better than others in a Zoom. We can't imagine having this cocktail with Tequila for example. But any sweeter style spirit will work, so try this recipe with Cognac, Bourbon, or different styles of Rum!

Ingredients

45 mL Golden Rum feel free to try other Rums too
1 tsp Honey
15 mL Full Cream Milk

Instructions

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker.
Fill shaker with ice.
Shake everything until cold.
Strain into a Coupe glass.

Notes

Make sure all the Honey is dissolved and mixed in. If you have Honey Syrup on hand, feel free to use about 15 mL of Honey Syrup rather than just straight Honey. That's kind of the point of Honey Syrup after all...

You're also welcome to garnish the Rum Zoom (or any Zoom for that matter) with a sprinkling of Chocolate Powder, but that's up to you. This is more of a dessert cocktail thanks to the milk.

Other than that, if you like Milk based cocktails like the White Russian, this may be a good addition to your recipe book, especially if you want to try something with a base spirit that isn't Vodka.

We’re not sure where the name “Zoom” came from, but it’s a fun one. Perhaps “Zoom” isn’t the most suitable for something with Milk in it, but hey, what’s in a name?

As mentioned, if you like a White Russian, you may like the Rum Zoom as well. It can be fun to change things up a bit sometimes.

Play with this recipe, as it’s very simple. It’s just three ingredients, so making simple modifications isn’t too hard. Perhaps you’d like it with a little more Milk, or make it sweeter with a bit more Honey? It’s up to you.

Can I make a bigger batch of Rum Zooms?

It shouldn’t be a problem to increase the proportions of everything to make a few cocktails at once. Just keep in mind how full you’re filling your shaker to ensure everything is well mixed and chilled. We’d say maximum three cocktails at once.

Will the Rum Zoom store to serve later?

Even if you’re storing it in the fridge, we wouldn’t suggest making a batch of these to serve later. When you shake everything, not only does it get mixed up, it also froths the milk a little bit, which is part of the taste and mouthfeel of the cocktail. Storing this cocktail for later would mean the milk loses its froth. Make the Rum Zoom to order!

What’s the best time for a Rum Zoom?

This is really a dessert cocktail, we think at least. Being so sweet and so full of Milk, we wouldn’t dream of having this before eating, or when it’s too hot outside.

All in all, a Rum Zoom is great for kicking back with in front of a fireplace on a cold Winter’s night after eating a nice meal. Enjoy it!

Is the Rum Zoom a strong cocktail?

This cocktail has 45 mL of Rum in it, which isn’t more than a lot of other cocktail recipes.

The thing you have to be careful with here is that the cocktail can be quite sweet. So, while it’s a bit of a heavy cocktail due to the milk, you can get in trouble by drinking it too quickly because of the sweetness. Enough of these and you’ll have too many! And with that in mind, even a couple of these cocktails can make you quite sleepy.

Is there a good type of music that goes with the Rum Zoom?

We get an old fashioned feeling out of this cocktail, but also a Wintery feeling. So perhaps enjoy a Rum Zoom while listening to Christmas Carols. Make up a big batch of these to share with the family during the holidays, make a roaring fire, and relax.

As mentioned, you can easily modify this recipe, so why not modify it to give it a more Christmas feel? Perhaps add some cinnamon or other Christmas spices?
