A Caipiroska cocktail on a table.

Caipiroska

Print Recipe
A great easy going party drink, this Vodka based cocktail is simple, sweet, and tasty. This cocktail is just Vodka with Limes and sugar. That's it!
Vodka can be a bit boring on its own, so this easy cocktail seeks to dress it up a little bit, but not too much. You might not even think this is a cocktail it's so simple, but it's a mixed drink with multiple ingredients, so close enough.
If you're feeling lazy and just want something tasty, this drink is for you. Otherwise whip up some with friends or relax on your own.
Total Time 4 minutes

Ingredients

  • 50 mL Vodka
  • 2 tsp Sugar
  • 1 Lime

Instructions

  • Cut the lime into four chunks.
  • Put lime and sugar in a rocks glass and crush together with a muddler. You want to express the juice but not overly so. Get some of the oils out of the lime peels but don't grind it otherwise you'll get bitter elements.
  • Fill the glass with crushed ice. If you don't have crushed ice, it's easy to make crushed ice by wrapping normal sized ice cubes in a tea towel and going over it with a rolling pin.
  • Add Vodka and stir.
  • Enjoy.

Notes

You probably see a bit of similarity to a Classic Daiquiri here, given that you're basically mixing Lime Juice, Sugar, and a base spirit. The big difference (other than the fact you're using Vodka of course!) is that this drink is basically a smash rather than using straight fruit juice. This means you'll get some of the nice oils from the peel of the lime.
This drink is fun in hot or tropical weather and is actually popular in South America. Try a Caipiroska if you happen to be travelling!

Our Review of the Caipiroska

The Caipiroska is a deceptively simple cocktail, but a cocktail that works very well. At first glance, the Caipiroska is just a hefty serving of vodka with some lime, but it’s surprising what just a little bit of sugar does to the whole thing. A cocktail recipe like this, though, shows how well a simplicity can work.

As I already mentioned, the Caipiroska has a pretty hefty serving of vodka. Sure, there are stronger cocktails out there, but when a cocktail recipe is essentially just 50 mL of vodka with a little bit of other stuff added for flavour, you’re in for some fun! Of course, this is similar to a Vodka Martini. After all, that’s just vodka and dry vermouth. And once again, that’s a fun cocktail too.

But beyond its simplicity, there’s little else to say about the Caipiroska. If you’re a big vodka drinker, there’s very little reason to not like this cocktail. If you’re indifferent to vodka, you may find some interest and refreshment in this simple drink. It’s cold and it tastes good, after all. If you absolutely hate vodka, you’re not going to find much to redeem the Caipiroska.

Much like the Old Fashioned, the Caipiroska is a quick and easy to make cocktail to enjoy at the end of the day without having to think about things too much. At the same time, it’s a great way to expiriment with different vodkas. See what you like, see what works for you, but have a little bit of extra flavour from the lime and sugar.

So keep the Caipiroska for a relaxing night where you don’t want to do much. Don’t put much effort into the cocktail, but enjoy it all the same.

Seriously surprised at how good this is for how simple it is. The I’ve melts quickly which is good. It needs to be a bit diluted.
